The LA Kings shed the “interim” tag and make Jim Hiller the team’s head coach going into next season. The move isn’t all surprising given general manager Rob Blake‘s statements during his end-of-season media availability.

What is news, however, is that Jim Hiller was signed to a three year deal, per ESPN’s Kevin Weekes. With many believing this upcoming season to be a prove-it year for management, seeing Blake allowed an opportunity to offer a contract with multiple years comes as a bit of a shock.

After the firing of Todd McLellan during the all-star break, Hiller took over and navigated the LA Kings to a 21-12-1 record to end the season.

At the time of the move, Rob Blake mentioned Hiller would be evaluated based primarily on wins and losses. So based on their record alone, you’d say he was successful. But following a third straight loss to the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the playoffs, success is moot.

When we last heard from Rob Blake, he pointed out that Hiller had some ideas in mind he wanted to implement if he were to continue as head coach. With this news, hopefully, we get a glimpse at what those ideas are at his introductory press conference.
