After a two-year hiatus from the NHL, former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is making a triumphant return to the league after battling health issues. The 37-year-old three-time Stanley Cup winner will sign with his hometown Winnipeg Jets

Toews cannot officially sign the contract until NHL free agency begins July 1. Because he was not under contract, Toews was free to speak with any team and make a verbal commitment, unlike other free agents. According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, it will be a one-year deal for Toews and the Jets.

Toews had a storied career before health issues slowed his progress. He captained three Stanley Cup-winning teams, was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 2010, a Selke Trophy recipient in 2013 and won the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2015.

Over 15 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, "Captain Serious" scored 372 goals and 511 assists. His 883 career points rank sixth in franchise history. Toews' 1,067 games played are fifth most in Chicago history.

The big question surrounding Toews is what he has left. Missing hockey for two full seasons leaves a lot uncertain. Toews battled chronic immune response syndrome and long COVID-19. However, he has said he feels great after a five-week Ayurvedic detox in India.

Toews will add depth down the middle for the reigning Presidents’ Trophy-winning Jets. Winnipeg lost in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs to the Dallas Stars. At minimum, Toews' leadership and championship experience will help the Jets in 2026.
