Jonathan Toews has returned to the NHL. He is signing a one-year contract with the Winnipeg Jets. At this time, a verbal agreement exists between the Jets and Toews regarding a deal, as contracts cannot be signed among free agents until free agency opens on July 1st. This will be Toews’s first time playing NHL Hockey since 2022-2023.

Jonathan Toews’ Return Is Good for the NHL

Toews was a big name in the league during the 2010s, as he was a part of the Chicago Blackhawks dynasty that won three Stanley Cups. He won those three Cups in five years in 2010, 2013 and 2015. Toews has been out for the last few seasons due to health-related issues. At 37 years of age, it’s going to be interesting to see how much he has left in the tank, and how much missing so much time has affected his game.

Toews’s contract with the Jets is reportedly a one-year deal worth two million dollars, with five million dollars in potential incentives that could earn him seven million dollars. That’s quite the deal for Toews to get, but it’s understandable why the Jets did it. Toews is from Winnipeg, so it’s a neat story that he gets to come home after being unsure of his NHL future for as long as he was out.

Jonathan Toews Expected in Bottom-Six Role

Jonathan Toews will likely play in the Jet’s bottom six to start the season. The Jets shouldn’t expect much from Toews at the start of the season considering how much time he’s missed. Starting him out slow should be the plan, but he might be so prepared and amped up to get out there that he might not let them. If there’s anything to remember about the teams Toews played for, it was that they were full of energy and competitiveness.
