Jordan Eberle signs two-year contract extension with Kraken, Oilers likely finished ahead of deadline

The Edmonton Oilers acquired two forwards and one defender in separate deals on Wednesday and Thursday, and it appears that’s it for the team ahead of Friday’s trade deadline.

Though Ken Holland checked off three boxes with the additions of Adam Henrique, Sam Carrick, and Troy Stecher, there was still speculation that more could be on the way. Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reported on Thursday that the Oilers were keeping an eye on Jordan Eberle and that the impending free agent would be an option for the team if he and the Seattle Kraken couldn’t agree on a contract extension.

On Friday morning, though, Jeff Marek reported that Eberle and the Kraken had resumed contract talks. Shortly after, Cap Friendly reported that the two sides had agreed to a two-year contract worth $4.75 million annually, ending any suggestion of a trade.

Seravalli noted on Daily Faceoff Live’s Trade Deadline Special that Eberle’s preference was to remain with Seattle and that he was able to squeeze out more money on a contract than the Kraken had initially offered.

“I think what these two sides had been going back and forth over was term. The Kraken had originally put on the table two years at $4.5 million. He’s able to squeeze out an extra $500k. And as I had been reporting the last couple of weeks, Jordan Eberle’s perference was to remain with the Seattle Kraken. He puts his signature on the dotted line to prove that.

For a team like the Edmonton Oilers, who were keeping close tabs on that situation, are disappointed a top-six addition isn’t coming their way. They were kind of holding out hope that he would still be there in the final hours leading up to the deadline.”

When asked if the Oilers might have a fall-back option to pivot to with Eberle off the board, Seravalli said he believes that the team is done making additions.

“I think they’re going to continue to look at the market but I think, for the most part, the Oilers view thesmevles as being done. They got most of their shopping completed already.”
