Joshua Roy Reportedly in Best Shape of His Life

On Monday, Nicolas Cloutier of TVA Sports released an article about how Habs prospect Joshua Roy has completely transformed his body over the summer with a new workout regimen. He told Cloutier that he has lost 15 LBS this summer.

Roy says that he feels that he is in the best shape he’s ever been in and thinks he can be a much faster player on the ice after losing 15 LBS. The 22-year-old forward also notes that the summer is not over, and he may lose even more weight before training camp opens up in about 2 weeks.

After a disappointing training camp last year with the Canadiens, where Roy got passed by multiple forwards on the depth chart, he is taking this year more seriously by cutting his weight and working harder to be ready this year. Last season, he went to camp with a spot to lose, and he lost it by not working hard enough. This year, he isn’t expected to make the team out of camp due to more internal competition and still being waiver-exempt for one last season. He wants to prove his doubters about his work ethic wrong by taking his workout methods to the next level this summer.

Throughout the summer, Roy has been working on his cardio with a high-intensity workout coach, John Chaimberg, who is known for working with athletes like Georges St. Pierre, Kris Letang, among other high-end Quebecois athletes to help them get into better shape over the years. Chaimberg called Roy the MVP of all the athletes who trained with him this summer, as he’d do very high-intensity workouts and never complained once.

At the start of the summer, Chaimberg knew that Roy would struggle with the workouts because he had never worked out with such high intensity. However, by putting in the work, he proved that he can do it regularly now. Roy goes to the gym 5 days a week, and would likely go more if not for Chaimberg telling him he needs a couple of days a week of rest from the workouts.

The truth is not only will his cardio be better, but with the work that Roy has put in off the ice this year, it sounds like his work ethic is now improved for the better.  Hopefully, he can now keep this work ethic, and it sticks with him if he does make the NHL at some point.

The only negative is that Roy has turned around his physical shape right after his draft year. The work ethic seemed to stay with him during the rest of his Junior career and first year in the pros, but once he got into the NHL, he took that work ethic for granted and fell back into the bad habits he had in his draft year.

Time will tell, but hopefully Roy now sees that the way to be an NHLer is to work hard and not just rely on his skill to get him there instead. With this season being the last year on his Entry-level contract, it will be a big year for Roy to prove he belongs within the Canadiens organization. He is doing the right things this summer, but can it lead to a better performance on the ice?

Do you see Roy’s new workout regimen helping him on the ice this upcoming season?
