Juraj Slafkovsky is simply unrecognizable these days. And for once, it’s in a good way.
On the ice, the Slovakian forward does absolutely everything. He imposes his physical presence, protects the puck, creates space for his teammates… and above all, he completes his line with Ivan Demidov and Oliver Kapanen to perfection.
The three of them understand each other, find each other quickly, and play with a confidence that leaps off the page.
What’s most striking about Slafkovsky’s playing is his evolution. He’s no longer content to be a complementary player or an element that just goes along the ramps. He now carries the puck from one end of the rink to the other, makes quick decisions and forwards with conviction. Things we rarely, if ever, saw from him before.
Result: the offensive production follows.
Slaf has 11 points in the Canadiens’ last seven road games, and 16 points in his last 13.

Numbers that speak for themselves, but don’t tell the whole story. Because even when he’s not collecting points, his impact remains visible. He wins battles, prolongs sequences in the offensive zone and makes life much easier for his linemates.
As seen on this Kapanen goal, when Slafkovsky brings both defenders to the net.

With Demidov, he forms a complementary duo. Pure talent and creativity on one side, power and game intelligence on the other. As for Oliver Kapanen, he takes advantage of the chemistry he has with both players to add his offensive touch by scoring goals, while being responsible defensively.
This line plays with aplomb, but with the intention of making the difference game after game.
Slafkovsky is also showing a new maturity. He’s not forcing the game unnecessarily. He chooses his moments better. He understands when to forward and when to simply make the right little pass. In short, he’s playing like a player who’s confident in his abilities, which wasn’t necessarily the case at the start of the season.
And this confidence changes everything.
Slaf is no longer just a project or a player to be developed. Right now, he’s an offensive engine. A player capable of influencing a game without necessarily being the night’s top scorer.
If this version of Juraj Slafkovsky is here to stay, the Canadiens may have found much more than just a power winger. They’ve found a complete player. A player who makes a difference. And above all, a player who is finally starting to play up to his potential.
And honestly? It’s starting to get very interesting to watch.
