Los Angeles Kings star Kevin Fiala is likely done for the season after suffering a major leg injury in Switzerland’s loss to Canada.

Fiala was stretched off the ice with three minutes remaining in the game after a hit from Canada’s Tom Wilson. Fiala had surgery on his leg after being airlifted to the hospital. There was no penalty called on the play. Switzerland head coach Patrick Fischer called the play “accidental” after the game.

Fiala’s injury is potentially devastating blow to the Kings, who are currently three points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The team also traded for New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin before the Olympic break. They were hoping to get one final playoff push with aging super star Anze Kopitar, who is set to retire after the 2025-26 season.

The Kings will now have to rely on other players for offensive production. Fiala was second on the team with 40 points in 56 games, and second in goals with 18. With the NHL trade deadline on March 6, the Kings will most likely look to find Fiala’s temporary replacement.
