The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Wednesday that they will host the Montreal Canadiens in their home opener on September 29th. On Thursday, the NHL released the rest of the 2026-27 schedule.
The 2026-27 season starts earlier, as the NHL has expanded the regular season to 84 games, an increase of two games. Toronto will be trying to rebound from a horrible 2025-26 season. A season that saw them finish last in the Atlantic Division and miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
Toronto feels like a completely different team than last season. The front office has been overhauled, the coaching staff has been changed, and a bunch of new players have been added. Will all these changes make a difference? Only time will tell, but at least MLSE realized it was time for real change.
The Maple Leafs have the fourth-least number of back-to-back games with 11. However, when it comes to playing against teams on their second half of a back-to-back, Toronto only gets five such games. The fewest in the NHL, while Montreal gets 19 such games.
The Battle of Ontario will continue on Saturday, October 3rd at Scotiabank Arena. It will be the Leafs’ third of four consecutive home games to begin the season. The Maple Leafs’ new associate coach and Senators legend, Daniel Alfredsson, will return to the Nation’s capital on January 20th. Toronto visits the Senators again on February 13th, and the Senators will be in Toronto on March 27th for the last regular-season meeting between the arch-rivals.
Sergei Bobrovsky will play against his former team, the Florida Panthers, for the first time on December 3rd in Toronto. The Maple Leafs will play the Panthers three more times, on March 6th in Florida, March 15th in Toronto, and April 1st in Florida.
The Maple Leafs will see some familiar faces on November 30th, when Joseph Woll, Simon Benoit and the Philadelphia Flyers visit Toronto. Woll and company will play Toronto again in a set of back-to-back games on January 7th in Philadelphia and January 9th in Toronto.
Darren Raddysh and Nick Paul will see their former teammates from the Tampa Bay Lightning on December 19th in Toronto. The Maple Leafs will then visit Tampa on February 20th. Toronto will host the Lightning on March 17th for the annual Toronto St. Pats game. The two teams will meet again in Tampa on March 30th.
The Maple Leafs will visit Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers during a four-game West Coast trip in October. Toronto will play in Edmonton on October 24th, visit the Calgary Flames on October 26th, the Seattle Kraken on October 28th, and the Vancouver Canucks on October 31st.
A highlight for Toronto players is going on a trip through California during the winter. On December 29th, the Maple Leafs will visit the Anaheim Ducks; then they will visit the Los Angeles Kings on December 30th, and the San Jose Sharks on January 2nd.
The California trip is part of a much bigger road trip for the Maple Leafs. On December 22nd, they’ll be in Detroit for a game against the Red Wings. Then a short break for Christmas, before heading to Montreal for a game on December 26th. After the trip to California, the Maple Leafs will head to Washington on January 4th to play the Capitals, and finally the trip will end with their game in Philadelphia on January 7th.
Toronto will see its longest homestand in November. The Utah Mammoth will visit November 3rd, followed by the Canadiens on November 7th, the New Jersey Devils on November 8th, the Colorado Avalanche on November 10th, the Minnesota Wild on November 12th, and the Oilers on November 14th.
