Kraken Recall Jani Nyman Following Injury To Jared McCann

The Kraken announced today (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled winger Jani Nyman from AHL Coachella Valley.  His promotion was needed on the heels of a lower-body injury for forward Jared McCann.  Seattle had one open roster spot so no other moves needed to be made to bring Nyman up.

The 22-year-old is in the final season of his entry-level contract and has seen NHL action in his first two NHL campaigns.  Nyman suited up in a dozen games in 2024-25 and then got into 28 more with the Kraken last season, collecting four goals and three assists while averaging 10:34 per night.

However, that wasn’t enough to earn a roster spot at the end of training camp last month.  Instead, he was assigned to the Firebirds, where he has been rather dominant early on.  He has played in nine AHL contests so far, scoring nine goals while adding two assists.  He has surpassed the 20-goal mark at that level in each of the last two years despite the amount of NHL time he has had.

As for McCann, the team is still evaluating his injury so accordingly, there is no word yet on how long he might be out for.  The veteran sits tied for fourth in team scoring with three goals and five assists in 11 games, a decent start to a contract year as he’ll be eligible to test unrestricted free agency this summer.  He’ll undoubtedly be eyeing a significant raise from his current $5MM price tag.
