The Seattle chapter of The Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) have nominated Jaden Schwartz for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This trophy is awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey.
This is Schwartz’s second time being nominated with the Seattle Kraken; the first time was in their inaugural season, 2021-22.
At the Kraken’s home opener this season, Jordan Eberle was named the second captain of the team. For the second time in his career with Seattle, Schwartz donned the “A”.
In November, Eberle endured a pelvis injury and had to undergo surgery. He was out for three months. Schwartz stepped up in his role, providing mentorship to the younger players on and off the ice.
Schwartz currently plays left wing on the first line, alongside Matty Beniers and Kaapo Kakko. Schwartz leads Seattle in goals with 24. He also has 23 assists, for a total of 47 points so far this season. He is in third place overall, just under Jared McCann and Chandler Stephenson.
Schwartz spent ten seasons with the St. Louis Blues before the Kraken picked him up as a free agent in July 2021. He recently hit a career milestone of 800 games. Schwartz has shown loyalty and leadership on the Kraken, and his statistics prove it.
Schwartz joins a list of 31 other players from across the NHL who were nominated. The PHWA will narrow down the list to three finalists and select the winner at a later date. Congratulations and good luck to all the nominees!
