Following Day 1 of LA Kings Development Camp, winger Samuel Fagemo spoke to the media about his start and how he’s improved thus far.
Despite being drafted by the LA Kings in 2019, winger Samuel Fagemo did not play in North America until earlier this year. For the Goteborg, Sweden, native, though, it is a case of better late than never. However, there remains room for improvement, and this week’s development was certainly a good start.
Following Day 1 of the Kings’ development camp, Fagemo spoke with the media about how his first day went but also what he worked on in the offseason and what he has carried over from last season.
“I think it’s a lot of things,” Fagemo said. “Coming to [my] first year here in L.A. and stuff like that, it’s really fun. And I think the biggest thing for me [is] to play [on] the smaller rink. It goes, like, so much faster, so you can shoot the puck more, too. So, I think [those] two things: to come to this year to just play the puck with high pace and shoot the puck as fast as possible.”
After beginning the 2020-21 season with Södertälje SK in his native Sweden, Fagemo traveled to Ontario, where he suited up for the Reign. Scoring six goals and five assists in 18 games for Södertälje SK, Fagemo joined the Reign without so much as missing a beat. In 32 games with the Kings’ AHL affiliate, the 21-year-old scored 10 goals and added eight assists. Not bad for one’s first go-around on this side of the Atlantic.
As for getting back into the swing of things in El Segundo this week, Fagemo’s first impression was an auspicious one.
“First practice back here at the dev camp was real fun to meet new guys,” the winger noted. “Yeah, teammates from last year, too. So, it was a blast out there, and I really [had] fun.”
As for which areas both he and his coaches want to improve on, the former second-round draft choice knows what needs to be addressed.
“The biggest thing for me to focus on and develop is my defensive zone and to get stronger,” Fagemo observed. “So, that was our main focus on this summer [and] to just work out in the gym and stuff like that. So, yeah, I think those two: to get stronger and get better in the defensive zone.”
Shortly after Fagemo spoke with the media, Kings development coach Mike Donnelly took some time to speak about the young winger.
“I think he’s made big strides,” Donnelly said of Fagemo’s recent development. “It’s tough coming from Europe and playing, getting used to the different ice surfaces and a different style of hockey. So, I think it’s always a bit of a transition for European guys.”
“He’s very coachable. He really wants to get better, he pushes himself hard, and he’s– I think his curve is– I think he’s doing great.”
It may be difficult to get a full analysis of players after just one day at development camp, but Samuel Fagemo has nonetheless gotten off to a solid start this week. Known as one of the more promising prospects in the Kings’ deep system, Fagemo knows what he needs to do to get better and hone his craft.
Overall, it promises to be an exciting week at development camp as only time will tell just how beneficial this time will be for Samuel Fagemo.
