With training camp just around the corner, we are previewing each player on the LA Kings roster. Up next: Anton Forsberg!
Birthdate: November 27, 1992
Birthplace: Harnosand, Sweden
Height: 6’2
Weight: 192 lbs
Position: Goalie
Catches: Left
Draft: 7th round, 188th overall, 2011 NHL Entry Draft
Anton Forsberg served as the backup goalie for the Ottawa Senators after the team acquired former Vezina trophy winner Linus Ullmark. An up-and-down season saw the Swedish netminder post a record of 11-12-3 with a 2.72 goals-against average, .901 save percentage, and three shutouts in 30 games. According to the MoneyPuck website, Forsberg’s Goals Save Above Expected (GSAx) was 2.2, ranking 34th out of 66 goalies with a minimum of 15 games played.

Looking at more of his advanced numbers from Natural Stat Trick, his 5v5 save percentage of .915 was tied for 27th out of 71 goalies who played a minimum of 500 minutes. His .810 save percentage on the penalty kill was ranked 46th out of 51 goalies who had at least 100 minutes on the penalty kill. He was the backup goalie for Ottawa in their six playoff games.

Forsberg joins the Kings after inking a two-year deal in the offseason. I usually prefer backup goalies to be signed to one-year deals because they can always be replaced the following season, but I liked the addition of Forsberg. The Kings will look for him to do what David Rittich had trouble doing most of last year: provide at least average play in net.

If Forsberg can put up a save percentage of .900 or slightly higher, like he did last year with Ottawa, it will be a plus for the Kings and a good insurance policy to avoid overworking Darcy Kuemper.
