Lane Lambert Is High on Auston Matthews’ Defense & Leadership

The Toronto Maple Leafs haven’t yet made their major offseason splash, but one subtle shift on the bench could have ripple effects. Lane Lambert, who joined the coaching staff before the 2024-25 season and oversaw the penalty kill, has left for a new opportunity as head coach of the Seattle Kraken. Before departing, he offered some rare praise—especially for Auston Matthews, a player whose defensive game is often overlooked outside Toronto.

Lane Lambert on Auston Matthews’ Complete Game

Lambert had high praise for Matthews’ two-way presence, singling out his responsibility without the puck. “There are a lot of things that impressed me about him, but I was most impressed with his team-first attitude and the fact that he plays a 200-foot game,” said Lambert.

This echoes a growing sentiment that Matthews deserves more recognition for his defensive game. While he received Selke votes in all but two seasons, 2023-24 marked a turning point: 69 goals and a third-place Selke finish. For Lambert, Matthews’ overall game stands out even more than his goal-scoring.

Matthews’ Defensive Value Is Underappreciated

Toronto fans know Matthews as the sniper who carries their offensive load. However, Lambert suggests his value is equally strong at the other end of the rink. “He unfairly doesn’t get considered in certain defensive categories,” he said. In highlight reels, Matthews’ stick work, positioning, and discipline rarely appear. However, they anchor the Maple Leafs’ top line in key matchups.

With Craig Berube now behind the bench, Matthews may be given even more responsibility—and more spotlight—for his defensive play.

Lambert Leaves Matthews and Toronto on Good Terms

Though his NHL head coaching record (61-46-20) might not dazzle, Lambert seems rejuvenated by his time in Toronto. He credited Berube’s no-nonsense approach and clear expectations as a major reason. “Very direct. You knew exactly what he wanted from you,” Lambert noted.

That kind of clarity could be crucial for a team still defining its identity, and for Matthews as he continues to grow as both a scorer and a leader.

What’s Next for the Maple Leafs?

Lambert’s words offer a reminder. Even amid roster uncertainty, the Maple Leafs have one of the most complete players in hockey. Matthews’ impact may yet deepen under Berube’s direction. And while eyes are on who’s coming and going, this offseason might be more about internal growth. That starts with the franchise’s cornerstone, Auston Matthews.
