Last Big-Name Free Agent Could Be the Missing Piece for Oilers' Cup Run, per NHL Analyst

NHL analyst David Staples believes that former Maple Leafs' Max Pacioretty could be just what Edmonton needs to solidify another deep run at a Stanley Cup.

All of the top NHL unrestricted free agents have been signed, with one glaring exception, Max Pacioretty, and that guy could be a smart acquisition for the Edmonton Oilers.

Although there is no indication that Max Pacioretty or the Oilers have a mutual interest, the veteran power forward's style of play would fit on Edmonton's roster, per NHL analyst David Staples.

'All of the top NHL unrestricted free agents have already signed contracts, but there's one big name player still available that makes good sense for the Edmonton Oilers to pursue.

This doesn't mean this veteran NHL forward will sign with the Oilers. But his skillset - think Corey Perry, only far more physical - fits with what Edmonton needs and would provide said free agrent forward, Matt Pacioretty, with a solid chance of winning his first Stanley Cup.'

This is especially true after the team lost physical wingers Evander Kane, Dylan Holloway, Warren Foegele, Corey Perry, Connor Brown, and Viktor Arvidsson over the last calendar year.

At 37 years old, Pacioretty would be a perfect Corey Perry replacement

At 37 years old, Pacioretty may be nearing the end of his NHL playing career, but in the right role and minutes, he still plays well.

Now 16th on The Daily Faceoff's Top 75 NHL free agents list, Pacioretty is now the third-highest player available after Jack Roslovic and Matt Grzelcyk.

His track record, 939 NHL games, 336 goals, 681 points, and 58 playoff points in 89 contests, tells quite a bit. Despite recent health problems, he still had five goals in 37 games for Toronto last season and four in 47 for Washington the season before.

Pacioretty's physical side and shooting percentage in abbreviated minutes still rank among the best.

Over the last two playoff seasons, he's second amongst NHL forwards on total even-strength points per 60 and hits per 60, ahead of players like Zach Hyman and Evander Kane. His 2024-25 regular-season stats also rank him in the top 10 for that same metric.

Though Toronto or Detroit appear the more probable destinations based on recent rumors, particularly at a reasonable salary (he earned $873,770 last season), Edmonton might greatly improve with him if he's willing to become the Perry-type player.

And if Pacioretty chooses Edmonton, the match and the cost might be just what they need.
