Last Night’s Loss to Carolina Exploited Detroit’s Deadline Needs
James Guillory-Imagn Images

The Detroit Red Wings suffered a 5-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes last night. The loss was eye-opening to the issues the Red Wings have as they struggled against one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. The Red Wings had played Carolina well in the previous two meetings despite losing one and winning one. Detroit hadn’t looked great even before the break despite one fantastic game against the Avalanche, and last night that same team that was seen showed up.

The Red Wings have a history of collapsing in March leading to them not reaching the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It is now March 1st and the Red Wings have fallen from second in the Atlantic to the first wild card spot which they hold by three points over the Bruins who are the second and five points over the Capitals who are the first team out. Now they’re also one point out of third in the Atlantic and two points out of second. They have a chance to write a different narrative in the 2025-26 season and get back to the playoffs. Last night’s loss showed some key things that they can address on Friday at the trade deadline.

Cam Talbot Traded

Talbot is a piece that can bring something back. Earlier this season he was “the guy” in net for Detroit but John Gibson has become the number one. There’s also a goalie in Sebastian Cossa just waiting for his chance. Cossa’s in the top of the league in the AHL in goals-against average and save percentage. He’s a big reason Grand Rapids has already clinched a playoff spot. He shouldn’t just be sitting in the AHL especially when he’s shown he’s ready. It’s time to move Talbot who will be a free agent after this season. Get assets get a piece for this team just get something but it’s time for Cossa to come up and be the backup to Gibson and get his real shot.

Defenseman

Defense is very much needed. Before the break this team looked completely different without Simon Edvinsson, he returned and even scored a goal last night but it’s shown that losing any of the top four could be detrimental. There’s been a lot around Tyler Myers who wouldn’t be a bad fit, he’s not the name that everyone says yes I want that but he would fit. Another name I’ve mentioned previously and like a lot for this team is someone like MacKenzie Weegar. Nevertheless, the Red Wings need defensive help and they need it now. Not a Jacob Bernard-Docker or Travis Hamonic type but a solid piece on the blue line that can elevate them.

Scoring

The Red Wings need more scoring it can’t simply be the top line every night. On Thursday they beat the Senators 2-1 with both goals coming from who else but Dylan Larkin. Last night however was a pleasant surprise Patrick Kane scored his first goal since January 8th, which snapped a 14-game goalless streak. They’ve also had a surprise pickup with James van Riemsdyk’s play, but they need something else. Names thrown around are Robert Thomas and Vincent Trocheck, those names would be great fits and would help elevate this Red Wings team.

Wrap Up:

Todd McLellan said it perfectly following last night’s game. “We have some guys right now that are just jerseys. Eating up minutes and not doing much else. Last night, Dominik Shine was put into the lineup for Elmer Soderblom. Someone like John Leonard should be back up with the team not second in the AHL in goals. This team needs a spark to avoid another March collapse. Hopefully, come Friday afternoon they’ve got it and can maybe even bring Leonard back and it’s full systems go for the playoff drought to end and maybe even make a deep run.
