Laurent Brossoit Heating Up At AHL Level
Kiyoshi Mio-USA TODAY Sports

Since signing a two-year, $4.65 million deal with the Vegas Golden Knights as a free agent during the 2021 offseason, things haven’t gone as planned for Laurent Brossoit.

The 29-year-old netminder wasn’t at his best during the 2021-22 campaign, recording a 2.90 goals against average (GAA) along with a .895 save percentage (SV%). That was far from the worst of it, as he went on to suffer a hip injury near the end of the season that required surgery.

That surgery forced him to miss the start of training camp, a camp that was huge for him given that he had competition in regards to making the Golden Knights roster in the form of Logan Thompson and Adin Hill. Ultimately, the two listed impressed during camp, and were able to secure jobs with the team to start the season. By the time Brossoit had returned, there was simply no room for him, and he was assigned to the Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Since being sent to the AHL, there hadn’t been much talk of Brossoit, but that has recently changed. In his recent 32 Thoughts blog, Elliotte Friedman mentioned the veteran goaltender, and questioned whether or not he may see some game action at the NHL level in the near future.

“Speaking of Vegas, I’m wondering if we see Laurent Brossoit in net soon,” Friedman wrote. “After a very rough start at AHL Henderson (22 goals in his first seven games), he’s found his way back from offseason hip surgery (24 in the last 12).”

It isn’t very often Friedman brings up tidbits like this randomly, meaning he has likely been hearing some rumblings. Interestingly enough, he didn’t mention a trade, which seems to suggest he believes Brossoit could get in games with the Golden Knights. While his 2.69 GAA along with his .908 SV% in Henderson is certainly respectable, it seems hard to envision him supplanting Adin Hill as the Golden Knights backup right now. That said, if an injury were to occur, this organization can feel comfortable in knowing that Brossoit is more than capable of providing solid goaltending at the NHL level.
