As a result of Scott Laughton’s lower-body injury, the Toronto Maple Leafs reshuffled their lines entering Saturday’s preseason finale against the Detroit Red Wings.
David Kampf was waived by the Maple Leafs and at the time of this filing, went unclaimed. Kampf was placed on the right where on a line with Max Domi at centre, and Dakota Joshua at left wing, via TSN’s Mark Masters. Domi was previously on the first line with Matthew Knies and Auston Matthews, but may be asked to play centre for Wednesday’s season opener against the Montreal Canadiens.
Matias Maccelli was bumped to the first line with Knies and Matthews. Maccelli was the early favourite to start the year with Knies and Matthews, but head coach Craig Berube made it clear that Domi was his initial preference, with Maccelli as his second option. Steven Lorentz was placed with Nicolas Roy and Bo Groulx on the fourth line, among the non-playing group.
Saturday’s game is the last chance for Nick Robertson to win his spot back in the lineup over Easton Cowan, and both forwards will likely play heavy minutes. Robertson was paired with Luke Haymes and Calle Jarnkrok (a potential fourth line centre for opening night) on the first line, while Cowan took rushes with Vinni Lettieri and Jacob Quillan.
Dennis Hildeby will start in goal, while James Reimer will takeover at the midway mark. Hildeby will likely operate as Anthony Stolarz’s backup during Wednesday’s opener against the Canadiens, while Joseph Woll remains on a leave of absence due to a personal matter. Reimer was invited to camp on a professional tryout option.
