Leon Draisaitl has spoken publicly for the first time since his injury, offering hope while remaining realistic about his recovery timeline.

The Edmonton Oilers star is currently in Munich receiving treatment from renowned specialist Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt. He is the same doctor Auston Matthews visited a year ago for his injury during the 2024-25 season.

Speaking with Sky Sport's Ben Heckner, Draisaitl confirmed he will remain in Germany for a few days before returning home. But before that, he said he hopes the Oilers can extend their season long enough for him to return and contribute.

"I hope so," Draisaitl said about the Oilers making the playoffs. "That's the reason I'm here right now. It'll definitely take a few weeks, that's for sure. But I hope that we can play long enough for me to be able to help out again sometime."

Then he mentioned, "I'm here in Munich until Tuesday, and then, yeah, I'm going back home."

Draisaitl's injury occurred during a win over the Nashville Predators after a hit from Ozzy Wiesblatt. He briefly returned in the first period but did not play afterward. Current expectations suggest he will miss the remainder of the regular season.

Despite that timeline, Draisaitl’s comments provide a boost for Edmonton’s playoff outlook. He remains optimistic about joining the team later if recovery progresses well. His presence would be crucial given his production this season, with 97 points in 65 games.

The Oilers continue to push for playoff positioning with a 34-28-9 record. Their offense remains among the league’s best, but defensive inconsistency and penalty kill issues persist. And since Draisaitl's injury, even their offense has suffered, like their 4-0 loss to Florida and 5-2 loss to Tampa Bay.

Draisaitl’s update brings belief during a critical period. While his return is not guaranteed, his intent is clear. He wants to be back when it matters most, and Edmonton will hope their season lasts long enough to make that possible.
