The Tampa Bay Lightning are not expected to have netminder Dennis Hildeby on the bench tonight as he deals with an undisclosed ailment. To fill in as backup, the Lightning announced they recalled goalie Mads Søgaard from the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch.
Regardless, Søgaard isn’t expected to make his Lightning debut tonight. Netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy is expected to start against the New York Rangers tonight. Before his injury, Hildeby had one solid game with Tampa Bay, earning the win against the Minnesota Wild on October 8th after stopping 34 of 36 shots.
Søgaard, 25, is in his first season with the Lightning organization. The Aalborg, Denmark, native was selected 37th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2019 NHL Draft and spent the first six seasons of his professional career in North America in the Senators organization.
Although he’s had decent production in the AHL, particularly with the Belleville Senators, Søgaard hasn’t made the most of his NHL opportunities. Since the start of the 2021-22 campaign, Søgaard is a veteran of 31 NHL games, managing a 12-11-3 record with a .877 SV% and 3.60 GAA. His best professional season came in the 2023-24 campaign when he posted an 18-9-3 record in 32 games with a .916 SV% and 2.45 GAA in the AHL. Still, he’s off to a solid start with AHL Syracuse, earning a 1-1-0 record through his first three games with a .937 SV% and 1.73 GAA.
