Linus Ullmark Has Shocked Response to Save-of-the-Season Moment

Ottawa Senators goalie Linus Ullmark became a save of the season candidate on Thursday night—and he did it against his former team, the Boston Bruins.

The Swedish netminder dove across the crease to snag a one-time shot from Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei while in mid air as if he were shortstop.

Ottawa won the game 6-3 and Ullmark's save lit up social media feeds across the sports world.

“I was just laughing,” Ullmark said. “Sometimes, you think and wonder how did that happen? Like, how? What happened prior? How did I get here? You just have to smile and laugh about it because you saved it. And then you let it go and focus on the next one. Because you don’t want to make a brilliant save like that and then end up having a bad goal right after just because you’re so caught up in the moment of feeling like a stud after making that save. You’ve got to keep yourself toned down a little bit and focus on the next one.”

After jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first period, Ullmark still acknowledged the game had its “ups and downs.” The Bruins began building momentum midway through the tilt, having capitalized on their few chances by scoring three times on just eight shots by the time Bruins forward Marat Khusnutdinov found the net in the second period.

Ullmark's efforts stopped any momentum from building on Boston's end, beginning with the season's save-highlight candidate of the year.

“I basically played [Marat Khusnutdinov] one-on-one,” Ullmark said. “He makes a great pass cross-seam and I don’t really see it. But at the same time, I’m just trying to get my footing and throw myself in there. I see the puck and I can extend my arm to catch it. Happened in the spur of the moment. But I’m happy that I found a way to just throw myself in there and didn’t quit on it.”
