Logan Shaw Celebrates Calder Cup with NHL Veterans

Logan Shaw, the Toronto Marlies captain, brought the Calder Cup to his home province of Nova Scotia recently. Teammate Landon Sim came along as well. Like the Stanley Cup, every player from the winning team gets a day with the Calder Cup.

Bringing the trophy to your hometown is the normal thing to do for most players. Share it with family and friends. However, during Shaw and Sim’s time with the Cup, something unexpected happened. Joining them in their celebration were two NHL veterans. Two players who are a pretty big deal in Nova Scotia, Sidney Crosby and Brad Marchand.

It didn’t take long for the two NHLers to get noticed when a picture from Shaw and Sim celebrating surfaced online. There is no clear connection between the Marlies, Crosby and Marchand. However, Nova Scotia is a small enough province for word of mouth to make its way through the hockey community.

In Nova Scotia, Crosby and Marchand are basically celebrities. They head back to the province every summer. The hockey community is small enough that all it takes is a friend to mention the Calder Cup is coming to town, and the news would spread through the province.

Crosby is from Cole Harbour, and Marchand is from the big city of Halifax. Both cities are over 400 km from Shaw’s hometown of Glace Bay. That’s close to a five-hour drive.

Shaw Will Always Remember the 2025-26 Season

Shaw has been with the Toronto Marlies for four seasons. The 33-year-old registered 23 goals and 31 assists for 54 points in 72 games last season. He has never registered fewer than 42 points in a season since signing with Toronto.

Before reaching the ultimate goal of winning the AHL Calder Cup, Shaw was already having a season to remember. Back in March, he became the Marlies’ new franchise leader in points with 217 points. By season’s end, Shaw now has 223 points as a member of the Marlies.

Earlier this month, the Marlies captain was awarded the David Andrews Award of Excellence. The AHL hands out the award as recognition of a player’s outstanding accomplishments over the past year. Shaw becomes the first Marlies player ever to win the award.

Offseason of Change

There will be plenty of new faces in the Marlies lineup this season. Shaw will be entering his fifth season as team captain. He will be looking to bring these new players into the fold and try to repeat as Calder Cup champions.

Shaw will be doing so with Steve Sullivan as head coach. The change behind the bench is the result of Marlies head coach John Gruden being promoted to an NHL assistant coach role with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sullivan already knows the players, as he was an assistant to Gruden last season before temporarily working with the Maple Leafs.

I’m glad to see Shaw taking the time to celebrate his incredible season. It’s nice to see some NHL veterans joining in on the fun too. For a fellow hockey player from Nova Scotia, having Crosby and Marchand come celebrate with you would be pretty cool.
