Mackenzie Blackwood Avoids Free Agency, Signs with San Jose Sharks
Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

It appears that goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood will not test the free agency market. Recent reports suggest that Blackwood has reached an agreement with the San Jose Sharks on a contract that is expected to be around two years with a value of $2.5 million. This development comes as many goaltenders are available in free agency.

The Sharks, like several other teams, have shown a proactive approach in re-signing players to avoid the risk of salary arbitration and potential hearings. In the case of Blackwood, the Sharks decided not to tender him the qualifying offer of $3.36 million, instead opting for a considerably lower amount in their new deal.

By securing Blackwood’s services, the Sharks address their goaltending needs and add depth to their roster. The terms of the contract indicate a short-term commitment from both parties, allowing Blackwood to further prove himself while providing the team with stability in the net.

This agreement highlights the ongoing activity in the goalie market, with several options available for teams seeking goaltending talent. As the free agency period unfolds, it will be interesting to see how other goaltenders navigate the market and where they ultimately find new homes. Among the bigger names out there, Tristan Jarry, Frederik Andersen, and Cam Talbot are getting interest. On the trade front, Connor Hellebuyck is the name to watch.

Sharks Traded for Then Signed Blackwood

The New Jersey Devils have made a significant move, trading goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2023 sixth-round draft pick at the end of June. Blackwood, who was once viewed as the future star goaltender for the Devils, faced competition last season from starting goalie Vitek Vanecek and emerging backup Akira Schmid.

The Sharks are hoping Blackwood is able to secure a spot in San Jose and provide the team with some stable netminding.
