The Oilers were brutally defeated on Monday by the LA Kings, and now they may miss Darnell Nurse for a few games after a disgusting play on Quinton Byfield.
The Edmonton Oilers are limping into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and on Monday night they had the opportunity to take on their opponents for their first round series, the familiar Los Angeles Kings.
Unfortunately, things between these bitter divisional rivals got ugly, with Darnell Nurse making one of the dirtiest possible plays as he drove the head of opponent Quinton Byfield into the ice with a vicious cross-check.
There's no other way around this, this was straight up intent to injure an opponent just days ahead of their Stanley Cup Playoffs series, as Nurse intentionally cross-checked Byfields head directly into the ice in a disgusting act.
He was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct, and now, the belief around the league is that the Oilers could be missing another player for the start of their series, with a suspension likely incoming for the veteran Nurse.
That would be another major blow for Edmonton, who have already confirmed that Mattias Ekholm will miss the entire series against the LA Kings, and with just one regular season game remaining, any suspension over one game will cause him to miss time in that series.
We've seen similar plays to this in 2024/25 with players driving their opponents head into the ice, with Minnesota's Ryan Hartman famously suspended for 10 games (later reduced to 8), and given how similar the plays were, it's very likely that Nurse should face a similar fate when he has to take on the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

Former Leafs and current Penguins GM Kyle Dubas revealed on the Cam Strick podcast that his biggest regret while in Toronto was trading Mason Marchment to Florida. Kyle Dubas has gone public with what he considers his biggest mistake as Toronto Maple Leafs general manager, and it concerns a player whose initials are M.M., but not Mitch Marner. Kyle Dubas' Biggest Regret as Maple Leafs GM Was Trading Mason Marchment to Florida On the Cam and Strick podcast this week with former NHLer Cam Janssen and reporter Andy Strickland, Dubas admitted he has 'tons of regrets' from his five years running the Leafs between 2018 and 2023, but one particularly stands out: trading Mason Marchment to the Florida Panthers for Denis Malgin on Feb. 19, 2020. 'I know you're not supposed to look back,' Dubas said. 'The biggest (regret) by far is actually Mason Marchment. By far. 'That one eats away and informs a lot of what we've tried to do since.' Mason Marchment had just four NHL games on his resume after years in the Toronto system at the time. Needing offense, Dubas targeted Denis Malgin, who had NHL experience but had never been a regular scorer in Florida. The one-for-one trade was completed just weeks before the league shut down for COVID-19. Malgin tallied just two goals in 31 games over two seasons with Toronto before being dealt to Colorado for Dryden Hunt. Marchment, meanwhile, broke out with the Panthers, became a 20-goal scorer with the Dallas Stars, and now begins the 2025-26 season with the Seattle Kraken following a trade this summer. As for Mitch Marner, who was dealt from Toronto in a sign-and-trade to the Vegas Golden Knights earlier this summer, Dubas said he hopes the change of scenery works out for both the team and player.
Lakers governor Jeanie Buss is supposed to remain in charge of the team for years even after the sale. Given what just happened with the Boston Celtics, it might only be months. When the Grousbeck family sold the Celtics for $6.1B in March, ESPN reported that Wyc Grousbeck would stay on as the Celtics CEO and governor through the 2027-28 season. Now, new owner Bill Chisholm will take over once the sale is final. That should concern current Lakers team governor Jeanie Buss, whose family sold a majority interest in the Los Angeles Lakers to investor Mark Walter. Buss is supposed to stay on as team governor for "at least a number of years," according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, but new NBA owners haven't been keen on waiting to take control of teams recently. Mark Cuban thought he would continue running the Dallas Mavericks when he sold a controlling interest to the Adelson family in November 2023. Before the end of that season, when Dallas advanced to the NBA Finals, new team governor Patrick Dumont, the son-in-law of Miriam Adelson, was firmly in charge. General manager Nico Harrison reported directly to Dumont, which is how Luka Doncic ended up traded to the Lakers despite Cuban's objections. It might be different with the Lakers. Walter has owned a minority share in the Lakers since 2021, so he's had a working relationship with Buss. Her role as team governor may be a condition of the sale itself. With the team preparing for a long-term future with Doncic, Walter and his fellow owners might opt for continuity in the team governor role. But in general, people do not spend billions of dollars on a professional sports team so that someone else can be in charge. Buss is in charge of the Lakers now. Recent history says she won't be for long.
Pete Alonso is now the New York Mets' all-time home run king. With his opposite-field, two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night, Alonso clubbed the 253rd and 254th home runs of his Mets career, moving him into sole possession of first place on the team's all-time list. He moved two home runs ahead of the previous record-holder, Darryl Strawberry, who hit 252 home runs with the team between the 1983 and 1990 seasons. Here is a look at his record-setting home run. Later in the bottom of the sixth inning, Alonso hit his 254th home run: Along with the all-time Mets home run lead, Alonso is also the Mets' single-season home run leader with 53 home runs during the 2019 season. Strawberry congratulated Alonso on breaking his record: His home runs on Tuesday were his 27th and 28th of the season. It is a big deal for Alonso because there was some doubt this past offseason about whether he would have a chance to set this record. Even though he was close, the uncertainty around his future, given his free-agent status, created a lot of questions about where he would play. Ultimately, the Mets re-signed him to a two-year, $54 million contract that includes an opt-out clause following the 2025 season. That opt-out will again create some uncertainty about his future, but it is pretty clear Alonso still has a lot of power left in his bat. Whether he returns to the Mets or goes somewhere else, he will remain the franchise's greatest home run hitter for the foreseeable future. He is now on top of the record books for the single season and career.
Former New York Giants superstar and current free-agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. emerged in the headlines on Tuesday afternoon. The 32-year-old took to X (formerly Twitter) to shut down a fake report that he was retiring from the NFL. Beckham spent the 2024 season with the Miami Dolphins in a very limited role, recording just nine receptions for 55 yards in nine games. However, he was a solid contributor as a Baltimore Raven the year prior, showing that he can still provide some production at this point in his career. Given that OBJ has no interest in calling it quits just yet, let’s look at three teams that should take a shot on the three-time Pro Bowler to see how much juice he’s got left in him. New York Giants How about a reunion in the Big Apple? It would only be fitting for Beckham to finish his career in the place where it all started. Superstar wide receiver Malik Nabers runs the show on offense, but after that, there are plenty of question marks. Wide receivers Wan'Dale Robinson and Darius Slayton slot in as solid options behind Nabers, but it would not hurt to add a veteran like Beckham into the mix. He knows what it's like playing in such a big market and could mentor the Giants' young offensive weapons while providing some depth production when called upon. Las Vegas Raiders There may not be a team with more of a need at the wide receiver position than the Las Vegas Raiders. The targets are understandably funneled to superstar tight end Brock Bowers and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, but they need help beyond those two. Third-year wide receiver Tre Tucker and rookie wideouts Jack Bech and Dont'e Thornton Jr. are next in line. While those three may play big roles right from the start, the Raiders could certainly use another experienced pass-catcher, and Beckham is a nice option to fill that role. Perhaps he even shows himself to be worthy of the WR2 spot. Buffalo Bills The third team that could be in play for Beckham is the Buffalo Bills. With Josh Allen in his prime, they need to continue putting weapons around him whenever possible. Second-year wide receiver Keon Coleman and free-agent signing Joshua Palmer are atop the depth chart in Buffalo, while reliable wideout Khalil Shakir is nicked up with an ankle injury. Longtime Carolina Panthers receiver Curtis Samuel also remains in the mix but is dealing with a hamstring ailment and has had injury woes in the past. Outside of Shakir, it's hard to know what you're going to get from the rest of the position group. Beckham will likely want to join a contender or somewhere he can play more of a factor than he did with the Dolphins in 2024-25, so keep an eye on the Bills.
