The Utah Mammoth announced Thursday that the club has signed journeyman defenseman Nick DeSimone to a one-year contract extension that carries an $800,000 average annual value.

“Nick adds a veteran presence to our blue line and is a good role model for our young team,” Mammoth general manager Bill Armstrong said in a statement. “He skates well, competes hard, and moves the puck effectively. We are excited to have him on our roster.”

Claimed off waivers from the New Jersey Devils in early January, DeSimone later saw 20 appearances with Utah in which he scored once and added five assists for six points coupled with four penalty minutes while averaging more than 15 minutes of time on ice per game. Combined with his time with the Devils earlier in the 2024-25 campaign, DeSimone closed out the season with eight points counting two goals and six assists coming in 31 total appearances.

A 30-year-old native of East Amherst, N.Y., DeSimone originally signed with the San Jose Sharks in 2017 as an undrafted free agent. He was later acquired by the Vegas Golden Knights and New York Rangers before making his NHL debut with the Calgary Flames in 2022-23. In all, through 58 career contests with Calgary, New Jersey, and Utah, DeSimone has registered three goals and 10 assists for 13 points.

Beyond his time in the NHL, DeSimone’s pro experience also counts 353 total appearances over nine seasons in the AHL in which he has totaled 38 goals and 141 assists for 179 points. DeSimone debuted with the San Jose Barracuda, the Sharks’ top minor-league affiliate, in 2016-17 following a three-year collegiate career with the NCAA’s Union Garnet Chargers.

DeSimone’s signing makes him the second defenseman to put pen to paper with the Mammoth in as many days as on Wednesday the club agreed to terms with budding blue-liner Dimitri Simashev, originally chosen sixth overall in the 2023 NHL Draft.
