The Utah Mammoth will have to wait at least another couple of months for the season debut of one of their veteran leaders.

General Manager Bill Armstrong announced Friday that forward Alex Kerfoot will miss the next eight to ten weeks after undergoing a procedure to repair a core muscle injury.

Kerfoot was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury on October 6th, and as a result has yet to play for Utah this season. It’s unknown if the core muscle injury for which he had the procedure is related to the earlier lower-body injury.

The Vancouver native signed a one-year, $3 million contract with Utah this past offseason, after registering 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points in 81 games played last year.

The eight-year NHL veteran has carved out a solid career for himself. After getting drafted out of the BCHL by the New Jersey Devils in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Kerfoot went on to a successful college career playing for Harvard University, capped by a senior season in which he tallied 16 goals and 29 assists for 45 points in 36 games played.

Having opted not to sign with New Jersey, Kerfoot became a college free agent in 2017 and agreed to a two-year, entry-level contract with the Colorado Avalanche. After two seasons in Colorado, Kerfoot was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he would spend four seasons, including a career-best 2021-22 campaign that saw him play all 82 games and put up 13 goals and 38 assists for 51 points.

Kerfoot then signed with the Arizona Coyotes in 2023, which brought him to Utah a year later due to the franchise’s relocation.

The Mammoth, meanwhile, have had an exceptional start to the season, having won six of their first eight games. Utah will play the second game of a four-game road trip againt the Minnesota Wild on Saturday.
