The Utah Mammoth have gotten a scare regarding their top blueliner.

Mammoth defenseman Mikhail Sergachev was forced to leave Tuesday’s 5-3 win over the New Jersey Devils due to an upper-body injury. The team confirmed that he would not return to the game.

The injury occurred when a clearing attempt by fellow Mammoth defenseman MacKenzie Weegar struck Sergachev in the side of the head, causing him to fall to the ice and then head straight for Utah’s dressing room.

Sergachev, 28, had a goal and two assists for three points over the Mammoth’s first three games of the season, while leading the team with just under 23 minutes of ice time. Last season, he put up 10 goals and 49 assists for 59 points in 78 games before contributing no goals and five assists during Utah’s first-round playoff loss to the Vegas Golden Knights in six games.

The Russian national is in his third year with the Mammoth after he was acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Conor Geekie, defenseman J.J. Moser, and two draft picks ahead of the 2024-25 season, Utah’s first after relocating from Arizona and changing its name.

He is now in the fourth season of an eight-year, $68 million contract.

Selected ninth overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Sergachev played just four games for Montreal before being dealt to Tampa Bay in June of 2017 as part of the trade that sent forward Jonathan Drouin to the Canadiens. He played seven successful seasons with the Lightning, helping them win two consecutive Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021. His career-best season came in 2022-23 with Tampa Bay, when he notched 10 goals and 54 assists for 64 points in 79 games.

The Mammoth will visit the Boston Bruins on Thursday before wrapping up their five-game road trip against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
