The Utah Mammoth lost top defender Mikhail Sergachev during the second period of Tuesday’s win over the New Jersey Devils. He sustained an upper-body injury after a zone-clear attempt from MacKenzie Weegar hit him in the back of the head. Sergachev was slow to get up but managed to skate back to the bench.
Sergachev recorded three assists before going down with injury. That scoring earned him first star of the game and widened his lead in scoring among Utah’s blue line. Sergachev also led the Mammoth in average ice time (22:56) through the first three games of the season – before his early exit on Tuesday.
Sergachev continues to serve as Utah’s top defenseman, a role he has held since joining the team ahead of their inaugural 2024-25 season. He scored 53 and 59 points in his first two seasons in Utah – and seems well set to match, if not beat, those numbers after a hot start to 2026-27.
The Mammoth will struggle to replace Sergachev if he is forced to miss time. Nate Schmidt closed Tuesday’s game with the most ice time among Mammoth skaters. He has recorded one point, three shot blocks, and seven hits through the first four games of Utah’s season. While no match for Sergachev’s scoring, Schmidt’s all-around reliability could shoulder responsibility while Weegar and John Marino work to make up for Sergachev’s offense.
