Maple Leafs Achieve Franchise Feat Not Seen in 62 Years

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night didn’t just give them control of the second-round series—it put them in the franchise record books.

According to the league, it marks the first time in 62 years that Toronto has taken a 2-0 lead in multiple best-of-seven series during the same postseason.

The NHL PR account reacted to the Maple Leafs' win on Wednesday, noting Toronto's holding a 2-0 series lead for the second time in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs after doing so in the first-round series.

"The Maple Leafs have recorded multiple 2-0 series leads in a best-of-seven series during the same postseason for the first time in 62 years and sixth time in franchise history (also 1963, 1962, 1949, 1948 & 1945)," the NHL PR account posted on X.

Toronto led the Ottawa Senators series up to a 3-0 lead before surrendering one game, ultimately advancing to Round 2 in six games.

Against Florida, the Leafs struck late in Game 2 after the Panthers had erased a one-goal deficit early in the third. Just 17 seconds after Anton Lundell tied it 3-3, Mitch Marner fired home the game-winning goal from above the right circle.

“We’re just trying to keep our calmness,” Marner said. “It’s going to be a roller-coaster ride throughout every game… stay in the present, stay in the moment, try to do your thing.”

Max Pacioretty, William Nylander, and Max Domi also scored for Toronto, the first two erasing one-goal leads by the Panthers before Domi put the Leafs ahead 3-2. Meanwhile, backup-turned-starting goalie Joseph Woll stopped 25 shots in his first start of the playoffs.

The Leafs now take their 2-0 series lead to Florida, where Games 3 and 4 will take place starting Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
