The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded forward Connor Dewar and defenceman Conor Timmins in exchange for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 2025 fifth-round pick.

Pittsburgh Adds Extra Depth

In all this, the Penguins get two players who are cheap on the cap and can join their lineup immediately. Both were previously brought into the Maple Leafs organization when then-Maple Leafs general manager and current Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas was still running the team. They know what they can give to the team for cheap value, all for retaining 15% of Carlos’ cap hit for this season and the next.

The Penguins have made many moves this trade deadline, acquiring younger and current players who can play now. This will help the current core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Erik Karlsson win a Stanley Cup while keeping their future open and bright with young, developing prospects and a plethora of draft picks to use or trade. They have four first-round picks, six second-round picks, and eight third-round picks in the subsequent three upcoming NHL Drafts. While many might have hoped to see a Crosby or Karlsson trade, Dubas managed his assets well to help set up the future without giving up too much for them to stay competitive now.

Maple Leafs Move Cap Space For Future Trade

The Maple Leafs have made a significant move by acquiring Scott Laughton from the Philadelphia Flyers. They are freeing up over $2 million in cap space to help bring in another player, Brandon Carlo. With the trade still not “official” by the league or either of the team’s social media, this one has and seems to be the precursor to the upcoming trade that will soon be verified. Dewar is a bottom-six player who has struggled to stay in the lineup, the same as Timmins, especially with Carlo now joining the team and potentially Jani Hakanpaa when he is healthy and ready to join the team.
