Maple Leafs Add Goalie Prospect to System

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been very busy this summer. New general manager John Chayka hasn’t stopped since taking over the GM job. He has been reshaping the team and completely rebuilding the Leafs’ depth. His latest move is certainly intriguing. Considering that we are in late August and a couple of weeks away from training camp.

Announced by the Toronto Marlies, the team has signed a handful of players to AHL-only contracts. Among them is Russian goaltender Timofei Obvintsev. As far as prospects go, he is a mystery. I think he is a work-in-progress type. With all the changes made to the Maple Leafs’ goaltending depth over the summer, having him in the system is a good thing.

Maple Leafs Add Russian Goaltender

The 21-year-old Obvintsev was selected by the Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2024 NHL Draft. Since then, he hasn’t really found any footing in any of the leagues in Russia.

While he did miss a bunch of time due to injury, he has kind of just faded away. He never really got a secure job with regular playing time since the Maple Leafs drafted him. During the 2024-25 season, he made a total of only 11 appearances for the MHL’s Krasnaya Armiya Moskva, CSKA Moscow’s junior team. He finished with a 6-4-0 record, along with a 2.78 GAA and a .908 SV%.

Then last season, while playing for Gornyak-UGMK of the VHL, Obvintsev appeared in only six games. Finished with a 1-3-0 record, along with a 2.86 GAA and a .899 SV%. A lack of playing time could be a problem, but most of it is due to injuries. Hopefully, in the Toronto system, he can stay healthy and get more playing time.

Joining a Good System in Toronto

For now, Obvintsev is part of a large group of goaltenders in the Maple Leafs system. Artur Akhtyamov will be the Marlies starter this season. High expectations after helping the Marlies win the Calder Cup. Obvintsev will compete with Ken Appleby and Samuel Hlavaj for that AHL backup role.

If he doesn’t make it with the Marlies, he should get a decent amount of playing time down in the ECHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones. That might actually be the best option for him considering a lack of games played up to this point.

Some goaltenders take longer than others to find success. Obvintsev has been dealt a poor hand. Injury after injury has slowed him down. I wish nothing but success to the young goaltender, and I hope this season works out for him regardless of where he is playing. I think a full or almost full season in the ECHL would be beneficial for him. Then he can challenge again for a spot on the Marlies next season.
