John Tavares has made it clear he wants to remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs beyond this season.
According to TSN’s Chris Johnston, appearing on "Insider Trading," the feeling is mutual.
Tavares, 34, is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 following the completion of his seven-year, $77 million contract.
The veteran scored 38 goals and added 36 assists for 74 points during the 2024-25 campaign, but struggled in the final playoff games against the Florida Panthers in a seven-game defeat in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Despite criticism over his postseason form, Tavares has repeated all season long that his priority is staying in Toronto.
"Yes," Tavares said during the end-of-season media availability when asked about returning. "It’s meant everything to me. It was a big decision I made seven years ago. I’ve loved it, and it’s been amazing for myself and for my family."
Johnston reported that extension talks between the Leafs and Tavares’ camp are expected to resume shortly, with both sides interested in finding an agreement.
"Well one player we absolutely know wants to stay is John Tavares," Johnston said. "The intentions are from Tavares’ camp to have some discussions with the Leafs and heading in, both sides want the same thing.
"The player wants to stay and I think there’s interest from the team side to see that happen."
Tavares expressed similar sentiments earlier in the season, noting he’d prefer to sign a deal before the March 7 trade deadline. That didn't happen.
At the time, Johnston suggested that such a timeline for an agreement was "doubtful" at best, with the franchise in no rush to get a deal done, which ultimately proved to be correct.
