The Toronto Maple Leafs have dealt with instability in net this season, navigating injuries to Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll while relying on depth from the Toronto Marlies.
With Joseph Woll, Anthony Stolarz and backup Dennis Hildeby under NHL contract, there was still one netminder in the organization scheduled to reach free agency in the summer.
That's 24-year-old Russian goalie Artur Akhtyamov, whose deal was set to expire in July. Entering the year, Akhtyamov spoke about his focus on earning another contract.
“I need to work, and we’ll see. My work is to stop the puck,” Akhtyamov said. “I hope I will sign a new contract with the Maple Leafs.”
On Sunday afternoon, the organization committed to keeping him in the fold for the future, announcing a three-year extension for the goalie.
The Maple Leafs inked Akhtyamov to a deal worth $2.7 million, carrying a $900,000 annual average value. The deal begins in 2026–27 as a two-way contract before converting to a one-way agreement in 2027–28 and 2028–29.
Akhtyamov, selected with the No. 106 overall pick of the 2020 NHL Draft, is in his second full professional season in North America after arriving from Russia in 2024. He has split time primarily with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
Through 32 games this season, Akhtyamov has recorded 18 wins with a .904 save percentage and a 2.86 goals-against average. He has gone 8-0-1 at home without a regulation loss since Nov. 26.

Following Sunday's news, all of Woll, Stolarz, Hildeby and Akhtyamov are under contract through at least 2028.
The Maple Leafs continue their schedule Sunday against the Minnesota Wild at 7:50 p.m. ET.
