Maple Leafs Announce Good News on Friday

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to navigate uncertainty in net, with Joseph Woll remaining sidelined and no clear timetable for his return to the crease.

Woll had been away from the team since Sept. 23 after taking a personal leave of absence. The goalie had not been seen at practice, and his locker remained empty.

One month later, on Thursday, the team officially moved him to long-term injured reserve, opening up $3.67 million in cap space while still withholding details about his status.

Head coach Craig Berube addressed the situation after Thursday's practice and before the move to LTIR, but provided no specifics.

“I don’t really have an update for you right now on Joe,” Berube said. “He’s doing fine. Like I said, when he’s back, he’s back.”

One day after that comment, however, the Leafs announced that Woll had rejoined the team.

"The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that goaltender Joseph Woll is rejoining the team and will resume team activities and on-ice participation as part of the return-to-play process," the Leafs PR account posted on X.

While this marks his first appearance with the group in over a month, the Leafs did not commit to a return date or confirm whether he’s been cleared to resume full practice.

Woll last played in Game 7 of Toronto’s second-round playoff loss to Florida. He had started six playoff games after stepping in for an injured Anthony Stolarz and posted a 3–4 record with a 3.56 goals-against average and an .886 save percentage.

During the 2024–25 regular season, Woll made a career-high 42 appearances, finishing with a 27–14–1 record and posting a .909 save percentage and a 2.73 goals-against average.

Toronto is set to face the Buffalo Sabres on Friday at 7 p.m. ET, entering the contest with a 3–3–1 record and seven points in the standings.
