Maple Leafs Announce Roster Update on Monday

The Toronto Maple Leafs won't have one of their top defensemen available for at least one more game.

Toronto announced on Monday that defenseman Brandon Carlo has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to Thursday. The Leafs' official PR account posted the update on X, confirming Carlo will miss at least one more game under NHL IR rules.

“Maple Leafs D Brandon Carlo has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 13, 2025,” the post read.

The move forces Carlo to remain sidelined through Tuesday's game against the St. Louis Blues, as league regulations require players placed on IR to miss at least seven days. The earliest Carlo can return is Thursday, when the Maple Leafs host the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Carlo already missed Saturday’s 3–2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks with a lower-body injury. He had been considered day-to-day prior to the roster update.

It remains unclear when or how the injury occurred, as he completed his last game, an overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday, without missing a shift and logging a bulky 19 minutes, 44 seconds on the ice.

The Leafs acquired Carlo from the Boston Bruins at last season’s trade deadline, and he's averaging just over 20 minutes of ice time per game this year.

Through 18 appearances, Carlo has two assists but has struggled to find form playing next to Morgan Rielly in the Leafs' top defensive pair, with the duo allowing 12 goals and getting a minus-3 plus/minus in 168:25 together.

In a corresponding move, the Leafs recalled forward Jacob Quillan from the AHL. The 23-year-old has posted 14 points in 14 games with the Toronto Marlies and made his NHL debut last season, albeit appearing in just one game.

Most worrying for the Leafs is their defensive depth continues to be tested as more players get injured.

Carlo joins Chris Tanev on the sidelines as the latter remains unavailable, while recent call-up Philippe Myers struggled in Carlo’s place facing the Blackhawks, opening the door for newly claimed Troy Stecher to debut Tuesday.

The Leafs (8–9–2) host the Blues on Tuesday, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. ET.
