Toronto is now looking to finalize its opening night roster during the final week of camp, and there are still some roster battles yet to be resolved. Easton Cowan, Toronto’s top prospect, remains on the roster and could very well be a part of the fourth line alongside Steven Lorentz and Scott Laughton when the club hosts the Montreal Canadiens on October 8. Cowan stayed on this line during Monday’s practice session, which bodes well for his chances.
James Reimer remains among the practice group, but will not be joining the team for the Muskoka trip. Joseph Woll remains on a leave of absence for a personal matter, and there’s no timeline for his return, Treliving confirmed Monday via Sportsnet’s Luke Fox. At the time of this filing, it appears that Dennis Hildeby will serve as Anthony Stolarz’s backup for opening night. Stolarz signed a four-year, $15 million extension with the Maple Leafs on Sunday.
This is the final week of camp, and there may be some really tough cuts for Brad Treliving and head coach Craig Berube to make, as the team will head to Muskoka for a team retreat, before resuming its preseason schedule against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.
