The Toronto Maple Leafs haven't done a lot of cutting from training camp. On Monday afternoon that changed as the club sent a whopping 27 players over to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.
There weren't any surprises from any of the players sent down. Defenseman Mikko Kokkonen avoided the cuts and will be a lineup that consists primarily of NHL players when the Maple Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens on Monday.
"The surprise of camp," Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said of Kokkonen's game. “To look at where he was last year to now, it’s been incredible”
The 22-year-old Finnish prospect was selected by the Leafs in the third round (84th overall) of 2019 NHL Draft and split last season with the Marlies and Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL.
Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten are among the players who have also impressed at camp. They would return to their respective major junior teams if they don't make the team.
