As the Toronto Maple Leafs search for different ways to replace star Mitch Marner, the path has led the team to be involved in all sorts of rumors. Marner was a massive piece to the puzzle for the Maple Leafs, and replacing his production won't be easy.
Toronto's front office has been searching all over the leagie for help and the team has been linked to many players. One of those is former Toronto player Nazem Kadri of the Calgary Flames.
There has been all sorts of speculation that Calgary could trade Kadri this summer, and the Maple Leafs could be an option. While Kadri could be a solid pickup for the Maple Leafs, the move seems more like a pipe dream at this point.
According to NHL writer Lyle Richardson of Bleacher Report, the likelihood is the Flames moving Kadri to Toronto is low. Richardson called out the rumors entirely.
Kadri was the Flames' leading scorer last season. He's crucial to their postseason hopes this season. Even if they were willing to part with him, the retooling Flames will want a good young player in return, something the Leafs don't have among their tradeable assets," Richardson wrote.
Even at his age, Kadri remains a force when on the ice. The Flames would likely require a strong trade return if they were to move him, and Toronto is low on assets that they could use.
Last season for Calgary, Kadri scored 35 goals and 32 assists over 82 games played. The veteran is the best player on the Flames right now, and Calgary isn't going to just let him go.
Kadri could be traded this summer, but it likely won't be to the Maple Leafs for a reunion. Toronto should be looking elsewhere for help as they try to build a more competitive team for next season.
