On a night where the Toronto Maple Leafs notched their third consecutive win – defeating the New York Rangers 4-3 in New York – former captain John Tavares reached a new milestone, tallying three points to hit 1,100 in his career.
Tavares opened the scoring for the Maple Leafs at 12:30 of the first period, notching his 28th of the season. He followed that up with an assist on the team’s second goal, scored by Bobby McMann before adding his 29th of the season at 4:16 of the second period.
The three-point game gives Tavares 60 points in 62 games this season for the Maple Leafs and it gives the 34-year-old another personal milestone in what’s been a strong offensive career since he entered the league 2009-10 with the New York Islanders.
He’s the 68th player in NHL history to reach the 1,100-point plateau and becomes just the eighth active player to accomplish the feat, joining Sidney Crosby (1,670), Alex Ovechkin (1,607), Evgeni Malkin (1,340), Patrick Kane (1,330), Anze Kopitar (1,264), Steven Stamkos (1,181) and Claude Giroux (1,110).
Along with the 1,100 points, Tavares’ two goals on Thursday night gives him 485 career goals in the NHL, tying him with Brian Bellows for 53rd on the NHL’s all-time list.
It’s the 13th time in 16 seasons that he’s hit the 60-point mark in a season and if he can score on more goal, it will be the seventh time he’s been able to hit the 30-goal plateau during his career.
As for his Maple Leafs’ ranks, of Tavares’ 1,100 points, 479 have come in a Maple Leafs’ jersey. That puts him 16th on the franchise’s all-time list for points, while he sits 15th all-time in goals (213).
From the 2009 NHL Draft, Tavares is first in games played, first in goals, and is the first player to reach 1,100 points – with the closest to him being Matt Duchene at 877.
While some believed that Tavares’ career was on a down swing as much as two season ago, he’s shown in 2024-25 that he still has the ability to contribute as a top-six forward on a strong team. As for the 1,100-point mark, it certainly won’t be his last individual milestone with what seems to be a lot left in the tank.
