Joseph Woll started Saturday night’s game for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but didn’t finish it.
The starting goaltender was pulled late in the second period of a 5–2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Woll was replaced after allowing four goals on 25 shots, marking his roughest outing of the season.
It was a move Craig Berube made to protect his goalie with Toronto already down 4-0, and the head coach revealed Woll's reaction to the decision after Tuesday's practice.
“He was so pissed off at me for pulling him,” Berube said. “But I like that. He wanted to be in there and fight, and that’s good.”

Berube: “His battle level… he was so pissed off at me for pulling him the other night, but I like that. He wanted to be in there and fight, and that’s good.”
Woll: “I was having fun… pic.twitter.com/Ckgf2DGu05
Woll confirmed his feelings and acknowledged Berube's comments, describing the moment from his perspective.
“I was having fun battling out there,” Woll said. “Of course, any time you get out of the net I’m not very happy. I thought we still had a chance to come back.”
The 27-year-old has been one of Toronto’s few consistent performers during a difficult stretch in which the Leafs have dropped seven of their last eight games. Despite Saturday’s result, Woll still boasts a .897 save percentage on the season and entered that game with a .912 SV%.
“I think I’m confident with where I’m at,” Woll said about his season to date. “I feel good physically, mentally, so I’m just going to keep trenching along.”
The loss extended Toronto’s skid and dropped the Leafs to a 9–10–3 record as they now sit last in the Eastern Conference while allowing 3.73 goals per game.
The team’s six-game road trip continues Wednesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets at 7:00 p.m. ET.
