Maple Leafs Lost Top D-Man for $500K — But the Bruins Winning Big

Elliotte Friedman dropped a nugget on 32 Thoughts that has to be getting under the skin of GM Brad Treliving and his Toronto Maple Leafs: the Boston Bruins outbid them by just $500,000 per season for Nikita Zadorov last summer.

Half a million. That’s all it took for Boston to land a player who’s now become a symbol of the Bruins’ identity. Zadorov is a tone-setter, proud to be a Bruin, legitimately excited to be wearing an A as an assistant captain for the team.

Zadorov said in a recent interview:

“I was scrolling through my YouTube channel today… and then I saw the highlights from the Stanley Cup Final game 2011 against Vancouver, and I watched all of them, and it was a nasty, really hard to play against team, so I think that’s the identity we want to bring back to Boston.”

Meanwhile, in Toronto, the conversation around identity hasn’t gone away. It’s only getting louder.

There were questions last season about whether the Bruins overpaid for Zadorov, who didn’t have a great season. This season, he has been everything Boston hoped for. He’s tightened up defensively, cut down scoring chances, moved pucks cleaner, and even helped spark offense. He’s also unlocked Charlie McAvoy (before the latter’s injury) in a way Bruins fans haven’t seen in a long time. As one analyst put it, “That’s as good as McAvoy’s looked in years playing with someone like Zadorov.”

And that’s exactly the kind of presence Toronto now lacks.

The Maple Leafs Might Be Kicking Themselves

Friedman even joked that in Toronto’s new WWE partnership, maybe the Leafs should send Roman Reigns out on Jan. 4 to deal with the man they couldn’t sign.

Treliving knew Zadorov well from their time together in Calgary. It’s not surprising that he made a pitch for the defenseman. He has to be wishing now that he ponied up the extra $500K. Not only is Zadorov wearing an “A,” he’s earning it. “It means the organization, management, coaches, staff, and players trust me,” he said. “I take pride in it.”

For the Bruins, $500K now looks like one of the best deals of the offseason. For the Leafs, it looks like a missed opportunity with real consequences.
