The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped Game 5 of their second-round playoff series to the Florida Panthers. Toronto is now down 3-2 in the series, and they will be looking to keep the season alive by needing to win a road game.
If the Maple Leafs can't stay alive, the team will enter the offseason with a lot of questions to answer. Toronto has multiple crucial players who are eligible to become free agents, so the team could look very different next season.
One of those is star Mitch Marner, and many expect him to leave the team this summer. After the Game 5 loss, Marner discussed his upcoming free agency.
“No, no thoughts of that at all,” he said. “Like I said, we have to reset. It’s obviously not the spot we want to be in but you can’t do anything about it.
“We know this is going to be a roller coaster of a ride and that it’s not going to be easy. Like I said, we’re going to have the mindset now to go into Florida and take it shift by shift and win a hockey game.”
Marner is focused on helping the Maple Leafs get out of this postseason round, but the idea that his last few days with Toronto may have crossed his mind. The star has been with the team his entire career, so it could be a bittersweet moment this summer.
The Maple Leafs will look to keep this series alive in Game 6. Game 6 is scheduled for Friday, May 16, at 8 p.m. ET.
