Once again, the Toronto Maple Leafs fell short in the playoffs, sending the organization into a crucial summer. Toronto has multiple key players entering free agency, and the roster could look very different next season.
But after another early playoff exit, the team may be looking to make some big changes. The front office has a lot of work to do, and it could see the Maple Leafs take some big swings this offseason.
One way could be the trade market, and Toronto desperately needs to change things up across the roster. NHL writer Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report predicted the Maple Leafs to go after New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider.
"So let's just pretend one, or both, of their two big UFA's leave. They are going to need to bring in some additional forward to help fill those spots. This is where Chris Kreider could be an option. He is coming off a down year. He is 34 years old. He is still signed long-term for $6.5 million per season over the next two years. There are some potential red flags there and some reasons to not do it."
Kreider has been great for the Rangers during his career and could help bring some new energy to this Maple Leafs unit. Additionally, his playoff career has been excellent, and could potentially help Toronto get over the hump.
The veteran has 48 goals and 28 assists in his postseason career over 123 games played. Due to his down 2024-25 season, eight goals and 30 assists, Toronto may be able to land him for less than normal.
New York is also expected to undergo a lot of change this summer, and it could see them move on from the veteran. Toronto has a lot of different options to look at, but bringing in someone like Kreider does make a lot of sense.
