This summer has been a strange one for the Toronto Maple Leafs. After losing star Mitch Marner to free agency, the Toronto front office has tried to replace his production in the lineup.
However, doing this is much easier said than done. Toronto has made a few moves this offseason that could help the club compete, but Marner's departure could have a big impact on the success of this team.
The Maple Leafs have continued to look for other ways to improve the club, and it seems that they may not be done yet. It has been rumored that Toronto has a desire to add another top-six forward to the mix, and they are being linked to a former All-Star.
NHL writer Sara Civian of Bleacher Report listed the Maple Leafs as a landing spot for Pittsburgh Penguins star wing Rickard Rakell. Rakell has been on the trade block all summer long, and a deal could come together at any point.
"He'd be a great addition to any playoff team in need of another scoring threat or two to shore up its top six. The Maple Leafs stand out as a team that lost a certain prolific scorer in the offseason and weren't able to snag a proper replacement on the barren free market," Civian wrote.
Adding someone like Rakell to the mix could help Toronto become even more formidable next season. The veteran is coming off an excellent season with the Penguins, putting up 35 goals and 35 assists for Pittsburgh.
Toronto could help bolster the offense with the potential addition of Rakell, and he could drastically help replace Marner's production. The cost to land Rakell would be the biggest obstacle in a deal, but the Maple Leafs' front office could look to get creative to help go after a Stanley Cup title next season.
