Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan breaks London Knights all-time playoff scoring record

Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan is in the playoffs of what will be his final season with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL)’s London Knights, and he’s doing just about everything he can to leave his mark with the organization.

In his latest accolade, he broke the Knights’ all-time playoff scoring record with a two-goal, one-assist performance in Game 3 vs. the Oshawa Generals.

The three-point performance brings Cowan’s playoff totals up to 12 goals and 35 points in 15 games, and he did it in style, including a highlight-reel assist on a goal from San Jose Sharks prospect Kasper Halttunen.

It was a bit of a surprise to see the Leafs select Cowan with the 28th pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, especially since most scouts and analysts had him pegged as a late-second-rounder or early-third-rounder, but in the time since, he’s taken every bit of criticism and skepticism and made sure to make his doubters eat their words. He had previously set the Knights’ all-time record for consecutive games with a point, with a 36-game point streak to end the 2023-24 season, and he carried that point streak into 2024-25, eventually breaking the OHL record with a 56-game point streak. He ironically passed Leafs legend Doug Gilmour, who held the previous record with 55 games.

Cowan was given every opportunity to make the Leafs this season, but the team ultimately decided that it would be better for his development to have him play one more season in junior. Although it may have felt like he had nothing left to accomplish, it looks like it was the right call after all. This will give Cowan the opportunity to come into Leafs training camp with a new sense of confidence, which he appeared to lack at times in preseason action, and you can expect head coach Craig Berube to give him the same chance to make the team next season. If he doesn’t, he’ll report to the American Hockey League (AHL) and hone his skills down there while aiming to be the first name called up when the big club inevitably runs into the injury bug.

Cowan and the Knights have taken a 2-1 series lead over the Generals and will look to head to the Memorial Cup for the second time in as many years.
