Monday night felt familiar — plenty of chances, plenty of energy, but not quite enough finish. The Maple Leafs fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Philadelphia Flyers at Scotiabank Arena. Noah Cates had a goal and an assist, and Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras got the Flyers the win in the shootout.
Toronto’s goals came from Dakota Joshua and William Nylander, but Anthony Stolarz kept them in it with 23 saves. The Maple Leafs competed hard, but in the end, the scoreboard didn’t reflect all the effort. The losing streak now sits at four games, and ten of the last 13 have gone the wrong way.
The third period was where it all shifted. Cates found space behind the net and wired a shot past Stolarz at 14:42 to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. It was one of those small plays that make a big difference — smart, precise, and at exactly the right time. Toronto responded when Nylander scored on a power-play feed from John Tavares with 2:30 left, but by then, the momentum had swung. The Flyers had the edge, and it carried into the shootout, where they finished the job.
The effort was there, and the Leafs had some good looks, especially in the second period when they outshot Philadelphia 11-4. But good effort only gets you so far. The Flyers made the plays that mattered when it counted, and Vladar was solid in net. Toronto has the talent, but they need to start finishing those chances and cleaning up little mistakes. Tight games like this one are all about execution, and right now the Leafs are coming up just short.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier, and the team can’t afford to lose the mental edge. Coach Craig Berube keeps preaching about competing hard and building on the positives, and that’s exactly what they’ll need to do. Players like Joshua are showing they have jam, but the veterans — Nylander, Matthews — need to start consistently putting the puck in the net. If the Maple Leafs want to turn this stretch around, it’s about finishing plays, staying sharp, and keeping their composure in these tight, playoff-style games.
