The Toronto Maple Leafs have played two-and-a-third games against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers without starting goaltender Anthony Stolarz.
And while they’re up two games to one with backup Joseph Woll in net, the team likely would feel better with Stolarz, who went 21-8-3 with a 2.11 goals-against average and .926 save percentage during the regular season, in goal.
However, it doesn’t seem like that’s likely following the latest update from The Athletic’s Joshua Kloke and Chris Johnston on Saturday morning, in which they indicated it's unlikely Stolarz returns at any point in the series.
“The likelihood of [Toronto’s] starting goaltender returning this series still feels low,” Kloke and Johnston wrote. “The fact that Stolarz has not even begun skating casts doubt over his return this series. Game 4 is Sunday night.
“… Should the series progress to Game 6, the Leafs would need to return to Florida. It’s worth wondering if the Leafs would even have Stolarz fly so soon after his injury, considering he did not make the original trip with the team for Games 3 and 4.”
Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube told reporters on Saturday that Stolarz, who exited Game 1 in the second period after taking an elbow to the head from Panthers forward Sam Bennett (he also started vomiting on the bench), hasn’t started skating yet.
Berube did state Stolarz was “progressing in the right direction,” but he didn’t offer any further explanation about what injury specifically his goaltender is dealing with (most believe it’s a concussion.)
In relief of Stolarz, Woll has allowed 11 goals on 84 shots (.869 save percentage), and he led Toronto to a 4-3 win in Game 2. Though he’s been mostly solid, he’s had trouble with three Panthers players in particular.
Forward Brad Marchand has two goals and four points, forward Carter Verhaeghe has one goal and five points, and captain Aleksander Barkov has two goals in three games against the Maple Leafs.
