Maple Leafs to wear Justin Bieber-designed jersey Wednesday vs. Devils

The Toronto Maple Leafs will host the New Jersey Devils Wednesday night as the Canadian team sits level with the Boston Bruins on points with 83 in the race for third place in the Atlantic Division standings but will likely make headlines for a different reason.

As Maria Iqbal explained for the Toronto Sun, Canadian pop star Justin Bieber is behind the reversible sweater the Maple Leafs will rock against the Devils as part of the club's annual "Next Generation" game meant to attract younger fans.

Per Greg Wyshynski of ESPN, the jersey was created in collaboration with Bieber, his fashion brand, Drew House, and sportswear company Adidas.

"My love for the Maple Leafs has always been a big part of who I am, and my passion for the team, and the passion of millions of fans, is stitched into this Next Gen sweater," Bieber said in a released statement. "I'm grateful to the Leafs for the chance to team up again to create something so authentic for the team and its fans."

This will be the 15th alternate uniform worn by the Maple Leafs in their storied history.

"Designed in partnership with Adidas and the National Hockey League (NHL), the first reversible sweater ever in North American professional sports, rendered in a fashion-forward black and blue colour combination, showcases the classic primary crest with a shibori-inspired print and the Toronto skyline subtly woven into the bands on the arms of the sweater and the uniform’s socks," the Maple Leafs added in a release shared by Sean Leahy of NBC Sports. "Off the ice, fans may choose to flip the sweater to feature a Drew House inspired version with gold trim underneath, and elements of the Drew House motif inside the classic Maple Leaf logo, to create a uniform that has never been seen in sport."

Chris Creamer of SportsLogos reports NHL rules mandate that teams must keep any alternate jersey for three seasons and wear the jersey a minimum of four games per campaign while it's in rotation.
