The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that they are trading left winger Nick Robertson to the Pittsburgh Penguins in return for a 2028 fourth-round draft pick. This comes on the heels of the Leafs selecting young phenom left winger Gavin McKenna with the first-overall pick in last Friday’s NHL draft.

Robertson’s history with the Leafs

Last season, the 24-year-old Robertson recorded career-best stat totals with 16 goals and 16 assists in 78 games for the Leafs.

Hailing from Pasadena, California, Robertson was originally drafted by the Leafs with the 22nd pick of the second round in 2019, and he had spent his entire career to this point in Toronto. However, rumours of the Leafs and Robertson looking to part ways have swirled for the last few seasons, with Robertson even requesting a trade back during the 2024 offseason, and while a trade at that time never came to fruition, new Leafs general manager John Chayka and co. have decided that now is the right time to end the Robertson tenure in Toronto.

Dubas and his guys

This trade also reunites Robertson with his former Leafs GM, Kyle Dubas, who held that position when the Leafs initially drafted Robertson and for much of his Leafs tenure, but who now holds the GM position in Pittsburgh.

Perhaps a change of scenery to a very much rebuilding franchise could be just what the doctor ordered to allow Robertson to unlock his full potential as a top-six forward in the modern NHL.
