Maple Leafs' William Nylander Reveals What Inspired His YouTube Channel Launch

Toronto Maple Leafs winger William Nylander returned to the spotlight Friday, not for missing practice a day earlier, but for unveiling his YouTube channel and speaking about it.

According to Nylander, he decided to start this new adventure with the idea of bringing fans closer to his life away from the rink.

The Leafs forward addressed the media at training camp and said the idea came together quickly, and also touched on the inspiration behind it.

“I just thought it would be a fun thing to do and, you know, give fans an insight to my life away from the rink and hopefully some fun stuff in there,” Nylander said.

Nylander said the project was born less than a month ago, with friends and family helping him launch the channel. The debut video, a short clip released Thursday, featured Nylander spending time with friends, attending a soccer game, and practicing on the ice.

As of Friday afternoon, the channel is approaching 12,000 subscribers. Nylander, however, admitted he wasn’t sure what type of content fans might expect.

“I don’t know. I think it’s just, you know, some fun things and stuff just to be along with how my life is like,” Nylander said.

Asked about whether his teammates might be part of the videos, Nylander said he hasn’t introduced the channel to them yet: “It hasn’t been around the boys yet. So, we’ll see.”

Nylander credited his experience with Amazon's “All or Nothing” in 2021 for making the idea less intimidating.

“I think that’s what made it kind of easy and it wasn’t going to really change too much. I’ve done it before,” he said.

Nylander, who signed an eight-year, $92 million extension in 2024, is entering the second year of that deal after scoring 45 goals and 84 total points last season.

The winger missed Thursday’s practice with what head coach Craig Berube called “maintenance,” but he is expected to return shortly after not reporting any issues on Friday.
