Marco Marciano in Montreal: What about Jacob Fowler?
David Kirouac-Imagn Images

As you probably know, the Canadiens made a big decision this morning.

Éric Raymond, who had been the Canadiens’ goaltending coach since 2021, has been relieved of his duties. Marco Marciano, who has been the farm team’s goaltending coach for years, will take over on an interim basis.

I would be surprised if he didn’t get the full-time job this summer. He has an excellent reputation throughout the NHL… and it’s safe to assume that the Canadiens didn’t want to lose such a talented hockey man.

Samuel Montembeault and Jakub Dobes, who know Marciano well, will now have a new voice (and new techniques) to help them get back on track.

That’s probably why the personnel change was made. When a goalie starts working with Marciano, he tends to improve going forward.

On the other side of the coin, Pascal Vincent is losing a good soldier in Laval. His goaltending coach is gone, and he now has to replace him for the rest of the season.

At this point, it is still unclear who will take over the position in Laval.

But it’s important to keep in mind that Jacob Fowler has been working with Marciano since his arrival in Laval. And unless Fowler returns to the NHL, he will finish the season without his usual goalie coach.

Obviously, this issue must be at the forefront of the Canadiens’ concerns.

Fowler is a big prospect for the club, and after a rollercoaster ride in Montreal, everyone at the habs wants to see him get significant playing time in the AHL.

His new goaltending coach will therefore have an important role to play. And I’m sure the habs are keeping that in mind.
